Book Description
Rachel Carson was always fascinated by the ocean. As a child, she dreamed
of it and longed to see it. As a young woman, she felt torn between her
love for nature and her desire to pursue a writing career. Then she found
a way to combine both. Rachel had a talent for writing and talking about
science in a way that everyone could understand and enjoy. With her controversial
book, Silent Spring, Rachel Carson changed the way we look at our planet.
Reading Assignment
Part I. Read the book and
find the answers to these
questions.
Part II. Write a book summary that includes the following:
Title, author, # of pages.
Identify the main character and five adjectives that bests describe him
or her.
Identify where and when the story takes place.
Identify three other characters and their relationships and interactions
w the main character.
Identify the main problem that the main character faces and explains if
the problem is resolved or not, and how or why not.
Make a timeline of 10 major events through the book.
Class Discussion
Class discussion about this book will happen in two ways.
1. Your teacher will schedule time for your class to talk about
the book.
2. Go online into the SOAR-High Class Discussion (GDOC) and read
comments from other students. Add your own comments responding to
the teacher question. Go back to GDOC on another day and read
and respond again.
