Act. 2.4 What are the
Spheres of the Earth System?

Make a web poster about the Earth System spheres

GOAL:   In this activity you will gather information about one sphere of the Earth System, make a web page, then present your findings to your class.  The web page should be simple clear,  and without fancy decoration.

A web poster - An outline for a presentation
This page will be a visual aid for your presentation about an ESS sphere. It should be clear, simple, and interesting. It must be in your own words - do not cut and paste information from other web pages.

1.  Choose your sphere
Each student team will pick one part of the Earth System to explain. Later you will share what you learn with your class.  Your teacher will ask you to choose one of these topics:

  •   biosphere
  •   lithosphere (geosphere)
  •   hydrosphere
  •   cryosphere
  •   atmosphere
  •   anthroposphere
2. Find information
Search and find information about your part of the Earth System.  Use the print resources (books) in your classroom to read about your topic. Use the web Links in Activity 2.1 Spheres. Also use the Web Resources link on the sidebar to find information on the World Wide Web. Use this page to locate a quote from a scientist about the definition of ESS. Include a paragraph describing what it means to you.

3. Take notes
Gather information on your sphere topic and take handwritten notes. You may use notecards if you wish. You must turn in your notes to the teacher.

4.  Organize your information
Summarize your ideas into 6 to 8 main points that you will share with the class.    .

  • Write the sphere definition.
  • Describe important characteristics or information about your sphere.
  • Give examples of how your sphere is connected to or interacts with the other spheres
Here is an example web poster page. Here is a checklist for the page.  Read carefully and include everything listed in the checklist.

5.  Finish the web poster page
Keep your web page interesting and to the point.  Do not include big words and difficult phrases that you do not understand.  Include pictures that help explain your ideas. Look here for additional pictures of the Earth.

6.  References
Where did you find your information?  At the bottom of your web page include the titles and author's names for the resources you used.  Use at least 5 resources - two of those must be books or pamphlets, 3 can be from the WWW.

7.  Presentation
Be prepared to share your poster web page with the class and explain what you learned about your part of the Earth System.

8. Peer Evaluation
Get an evaluation checklist  and choose one other student team's web page to evaluate. Hand in the completed checklist to your teacher.

You web poster page should include:
  • Title:   What is Earth System Science?
  • Your choice of a  scientist's definition
  • What the definition means to you.
  • Your sphere topic
  • Sphere definition
  • characteristics of your sphere
  • how sphere connects to others
  • Illustrations.
  • References  (5 resources:  2 print, 3 www)
