NEAR Studies an Asteriod
http://near.jhuapl.edu/NEAR/Education/images/neartitle.jpg

The N.E.A.R. Space Craft
 Uses Remote Sensing to study
 the asteriod Eros.

The space craft NEAR was launched in 1996 and  flew in space for 4 years.   See it's path. Click here to see the asteriods  which NEAR visited during it's travels.
Eros is a large asteriod, about 21 miles long.  Click here to see Eros spinning.  And here's how it looked as the NEAR spacecraft flew closer and closer to Eros.  Finally Spacecraft NEAR arrived at the asteriod named Eros.

(Click here to see the difference between asteriods, comets, meteorites, and meteoroids!)

On February 14, 2000 the spacecraft NEAR began to orbit Eros.  That was the first time in history that an Earth spacecraft  orbited an asteriod!! http://near.jhuapl.edu/NEAR/Education/images/NEAR_Rendezvous_Geom.gif
Scientists want to measure and learn many things about an asteroid.  But NEAR did most of its measurements WITHOUT TOUCHING  Eros!   How did NEAR measure things on Eros from a distance?    NEAR studied Eros with special instruments.  The instruments can 'see' different kinds of 'light' waves.  Light is one kind of wave on the  Electromagnetic Spectrum.

NEAR used different kinds of Electromagnetic waves.  Seven different instruments received the waves.  Click on the picture to see a larger image.

Dr. Lucy McFadden is a scientist on the NEAR space craft project.   Dr. McFadden helped to design this drawing.  Dr. McFadden may send email to SOAR-High students about her experiences with NEAR this month.  Watch for email from Lucy McFadden!
