A Note to all SOAR-High Students

Hello Students,

In SOAR-High Earth System Science you will explore web-based learning and collaboration with other students.  Sometimes the other students will be from your own class, and sometimes you will work with students in other classes and schools.

SOAR-High can prepare you for life after high school in many ways.   Besides learning more about how the Earth works as a system, you will....

  •  learn to use different kinds of technology for working together with other people.
  •  develop independent learning skills, which are very important for you to become a life-long learner.
  •  practice working with other people (collaboration) as part of a team.
The following activities will help you think about becoming an independent learner, and also being a good member of a team of science investigators.

    SOAR-High Project Developer,
    Science Teacher, MSSD

Be an Independent learner
Many students think independent learning means working alone.  That is Not true!  Independent learners work with other people all the time.
Complete this inventory of characteristic of independent learners.   Set goals for your own learning.

Learning by Collaborating
Here is a powerpoint presentation that will help you think about how you can learn with and from other students when you work in Teams,  called Learning by Collaboration.

Be an effective member of a team
Teamwork is important if you want to complete your assignments.

        1.  Read about scientist's experience  as a member of a scientific team.
        2.  Review a list of team rules.
        3.  Participate in a  Team Activity,
        4.  Evaluate  your team.
