Teacher Notes
spectrum Introduction to the
Electromagnetic Spectrum

[ back ]

View the visible spectrum with a prism

Direct the light from an overhead projector onto a wall to view a beautiful spectrum of visible light.

Set up the overhead projector as in this picture:

Place two sheets of paper on the overhead projector:

Turn off any room lights shining directly on the equipment set up.

Turn on the projector and carefully turn the prism until you see a spectrum on the wall where you want it.   Tape a sheet of white paper on the wall to make the colors in the specturm most clearly visible.

Keep the slit between the two papers on the overhead very narrow until you have the spectrum in place, then move the two papers slightly apart to make final adjustments in the quality of the spectrum.

Students view the spectrum and take notes.
