This Guide has 4 parts with Hints for each one:
Part 1.   Important rules to remember about files
Part II.  How to open the FTP program and use it to transfer files
Part III. Look at your files on the World Wide Web
Part IV.  How to work with Files from your Gallaudet Web account
                 - Revising your Web pages

Part 1. Important rules to remember about files
Learn these rules!   When you have problems getting your web page to show up correctly, carefully check each of these rules .

Important Hints:
Sometimes WS_FTP changes the files during the transfer.  Lower case and capitals sometimes change,  and if there are too many letters the file name itself may change a little.   If your page is not working, check all the file names.

If a file name is changed, remember you must also change the LINK to that file in your web page.  Everything must match up perfectly!

Part II.  How to open the FTP program and use it to transfer files

1. From the Start Menu on your desktop, open WS_FTP.   FTP will open, and a Connect Window will automatically pop up.

2. Select the Profile named:  Gallaudet FTP
    Host name: 134.231.128.120
    User ID:  Your.Name
Password:  (use your password from GDOC and TeamWave)
    Click  'OK'

FTP will show you two windows.
In the left window are the files from your local computer.  In the right window are the files in your Gallaudet Web account  (on the Gallaudet Web Server computer).

3.  Find your file on your computer:
There are two small dots ( ..) at the top in the left window.  Click the dots to move up the file structure on your computer.  Click and select folders until you locate the file you want to transfer.  Select that file.  Click the right arrow on the center bar - your file will move into the right window.   Select and click the right arrow for all the files you want to transfer.  The files will all appear in the right window.

Important Hints:
Pay attention to the messages in the lower left corner of the WS_FTP window.

If  the FTP connection closes while you are working, click 'close', then click 'open'.  A new Session Profile box will pop up.

If you have problems moving files, close and open FTP again.

Save account space!  Always delete unused files.  Do not leave extra files in your account.

Part III.  Look at your files on the World Wide Web

1.  Open Netscape Navigator.

2. Open your web account address, following this format:
http://team12.gallaudet.edu/soarhigh2000/Name/                     (Use your own first name)

3.  You will see a list of files.  Select the file you sent by FTP  - click and open it.

Important Hints:
After you FTP always check that your web page shows up in a web browser the way you want it to look.  Check that all gifs and links are working

Part IV. How to work with Files from your Gallaudet Web account
or  How to revise your Web pages

1. Always start working by opening the web page file in your Web account - do not open an old file on your computer.

2. With the file open in Netscape, select 'Edit Page' from the File Menu.  The file will open in a Composer window.

3. Work on the file.  Save onto your local harddisk, always to the same place (set up a file folder that is yours).

4.  When you are done working for the day, FTP the file back to your Gallaudet Web account.  Make sure you also send any new files that go with your page, such as new gifs that you have added to your web page.

5.  Link all of your projects to your Web Cover Page by adding links to each project to the bottom of the page.
For Team partners,  keep your project in only one partner's account  (Don't put the files in both accounts).   Both partners can link to the project from their individual Cover Pages.

Important Hints:
Save often while you work, and always pay attention to where you are saving to.
