Act. 1.22  Science Investigation Quiz

Your teacher will provide you with some equipment and ask you to investigate a simple question (Problem).   Use an appropriate investigation process to explore the question.   Your teacher will be observing your method and read your written report,  and give you feedback.

The purpose of this activity is to give you the opportunity to show your science investigation skills.  You will show your ability to

1.  Ask a scientific question and create an appropriate hypothesis.
2.  Conduct a scientific investigation carefully and accurately
3.  Record data.
4.  Analyze the data using a graph,
5.  Draw conclusions from data.
6.  Write a well organized report showing your results.  The report must include these sections:
Problem, Hypothesis, Procedure, Results, Conclusions, new question.

Show your skills:  Investigate the following problem

 Problem:
If you change the length of string on a pendulum, will it change how fast or slow the pendulum swings back and forth?

Do steps 1-4 with a partner.
Do steps 5-6 individually.

Procedure:
1. You will need these materials:  a metal washer, string, metric measuring tape, scissors, and a timing device.

2.  Construct a "pendulum system" out of the string and a metal washer.

3.  Test how many "full swings" the pendulum will make in 10 seconds at the following lengths:  10 cm, 30 cm, 45 cm, 60 cm and 80 cm.

4. Make a table to show the results of your pendulum tests.

5. Use a piece of graph paper to make a line graph to show your data.

6.  Write a report on the experiment.

7.  Your teacher will give you feedback on your work with this checklist
